About The Jeff Musser Foundation
In 1999, I was diagnosed with acute leukemia. My choices at that time were to get into remission and have a bone marrow transplant or to try and endure a 2-year chemotherapy program when I got into remission. My doctors felt if I could survive the 2-year chemo program my chances of longer life would be better.
I chose to take the 2-year program, and during the time I was making this decision, my friends were already planning a golf tournament in my name to raise funds for me as I was going through my treatments. Fortunately after my 2 years of treatment, I didn’t need the money, and this is how the foundation got started. I just needed to decide what to do with the monies raised.
Looking back over those 2 years, the hardest thing for me was to watch children and their families going through the same thing as I. So I decided to use the monies to give financial aid to families with children in Lancaster County battling cancer. We have been helping families since 2002 and have continued the golf tournament every year. We have also added our Cadillac dinner event in the fall, and are blessed to receive grants and donations from other organizations who support our mission. We have also expanded our territory due to the growth of our funds and the needs in south central Pennsylvania.
The majority of the families that we help are referred to us by social workers from Penn State Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, or Nemours Children’s Hospital. We try to satisfy the requests made by the social workers on behalf of the families they follow, or I contact the families to determine how to best meet their needs. A lot of our recipients are two income families that go to one income because of the need to take care of their child and transport them to doctor appointments and chemo treatments. The foundation will usually pay things like rent or mortgages, utilities, insurances, and travel expenses for treatments. We are making a difference in these families’ lives and have given out more than $3,008,500 since 2002.
Thank you.
